SEO will not bring you the most immediate results but will bring the best results over time, based on your business. That’s right, I said based on your business because SEO is not necessarily valuable for all businesses; however; it is valuable for most.
How Do I Know SEO Is Right for My Business?
Market Research. SEO only makes sense if you potential clients or customers are searching for you online. This is why market research is critical. Market research will provide insight into the major markets and niche markets for your businesses products or services.
What is Market Research?
The simple version is that market research is the process of identifying keywords phrases that translate to buyers. This includes not only finding the keywords phrases for your products or services but also finding the keyword phrases that closely related. Once you have found the keyword phrases, the next step is to look at how many competitors are in the market and if it is possible to penetrate the market. Your SEO budget will depend on how competitive a market is. If it is something new that has not been done or is just to be released then it will be easier to establish yourself as an authority, but if it is an established market you are entering you will need to spend a lot more effort to become an authority. This is why it is best to start with a niche or long term search phrase, get ranked well for it and then move up the chain. Don’t start with major keywords off the bat for existing markets, starting making money and then use the profits to go after higher traffic keyword phrases. Every once in a while you will get lucky and find a niche that has a decent amount o traffic that you can rank for.
Common Mistakes People Make with SEO
Making to many changes at once. To track how the changes you are making for SEO, you need to make small changes over-time. This allows you to a better ability to validate the progress, without creating more confusion. Not Following Up. Great so you made some minor changes did you follow up to track the progress. For instance, has your page been re-indexed and has your traffic changed. Let it run. Make sure you give your changes enough time to run, before checking the results and making more changes. I would recommend 15 – 30 days.
How Long Should Keyword Research Take
The standard answer is that it depends. On how saturated a particular market is, how broad the market is and what you are trying to achieve. In general, we spend a minimum of three hours researching a market. Depending on your experience this may be low or high. For us, three hours gives enough time to research a handful of keywords we like and feel like we could go after. Of course, the next step after finding killer keywords is competitor analysis. This is the process of seeing how competitors are ranked for the keywords you are targeting.
On-Page SEO
This part is really important. If you won’t link to your own pages, then why should someone else. Make sure that you link to your own pages in non-spamming ways. Write a blog post and in that post include a keyword phrase you would like to rank for and link to it. Another instance is navigation, make sure you link to the pages that are important to you in your primary or secondary nav. Find unique and creative ways to work with your on-page SEO.
